England 2 Switzerland 1
Fabio Capello got off to a winning as England manager thanks to goals from Jermaine Jenas and second half substitute Seam Wright-Phillips.
The Italian paid no respects for reputation whilst picking his first line up, leaving Michael Owen on the bench. He based his line up on league form with James in goal, a back line of Brown, Upson, Ferdinand and Ashley Cole. The midfield included Bentley, Jenas, Gerrard, Joe Cole and Barry leaving Wayne Rooney as a sole striker.
During a scrappy first half England created chances however were unable to break through until the 40th minute when good work on the left from Joe Cole found Jenas in the six-yard box to open the scoring.
In the second half the Swiss made four early substitutions, which disrupted their setup and England began to take control, however against the run of play substitute Eren Derdiyok equalised. Shortly after England restored their lead as Gerrard broke free on the left and passed the ball across the Swiss goal for substitute Sean Wright-Phillips to tap in.
England were dominant throughout the second half and were unlucky not to have their lead extended. Peter Crouch replaced Joe Cole and played as the sole striker with Wayne rooney moving to the left of midfield. This was possibly when England looked at their best with a target man capable of holding the ball up and Rooney being able to express himself from deep.
The match finished England 2 Switzerland 1 with Steven Gerrard being awarded man of the match, although a more realistic test will come next month as the English travel to the Stade De France to play the world cup finalists.
