Tottenham 2 Chelsea 1 AET
Tottenham have lifted the Carling Cup after an epic comeback against arch rivals Chelsea. Spurs went into the match as under dogs with Chelseabeing clear favourites with captain John Terry leading the line after speculation suggesting he would be rested. The only surprise from the starting line ups was the omission of Englandstar Joe Cole.
Tottenham took control of the game early on creating numerous chances including Chimbonda’s effort bouncing off the crossbar. Chelseabegan to work their way back into the game and Zokora’s foul 25 yards from goal on Drogba gave the Ivory Coast star the chance to draw first blood for his team with an excellent free kick.
Spurs would have felt hard done by at half time after such a dominant half;Chelsea started the better however it did not take long for Spurs to regain their stride. Ramos introduced Tom Huddlestone whose passing and creativity changed the game, although Chimbonda was not happy and having to make way. It was Huddlestone who forced Wayne Bridgeinto conceding a penalty in the 62nd minute. Berbatov stepped up and calmly slotted away the spot kick.
From here Spurs continued to dominate with Berbatov coming close again and Zokoora finding himself clean through, Cech saved his initial effort and Zakora somehow blazed over from six yards.
It was a nervous end to the ninety minutes from both sides, although there were chances at both ends. The match went into extra time, the game began to open up as passes began to be mis placed. In the first half of extra time spurs took the lead after a well aimed free kick by Jenas to the back post gave Woodgate the chance to open his Tottenham account. The defender headed home from six yards giving spurs the lead and the stadium erupted.
Despite a late surge from Chelsea, Spurs held on to claim the cup. Tottenham’s first trophy in 9 years appeared to be worth the wait as players and fans celebrated their famous victory. The Sports Centre Direct man of the match award went to Johnathon Woodgate.
